The PCL serves as the primary restraint to posterior tibial displacement; thus a PCL tear typically occurs as a result of a fall directly onto a flexed knee or a dashboard injury during a motor vehicle accident. This pattern of kissing contusions with edema in the anterior tibial plateau and femoral condyles is typical. PCL tears can be associated with tears of the ACL, especially in the case of knee dislocation, as well as meniscal tears, although not as frequently as with ACL tears.
