Case 30 - 44 year old female with instability after skiing
44 year old female with left knee instability following a skiing accident.
- This case is more straight-forward than the previous two cases and should be relatively simple to understand at this point. On our fluid-sensative sequence we can see prominent periligamentous edema around the proximal MCL.
- The integrity and signal of the ligament is better assessed on our T1 and PD images, which clearly show the affected portion of the proximal MCL is intact, but thickened with mildly increased signal.
- These findings correspond to a high-grade sprain of the proximal MCL.
- Unlike our prior cases there are no associated findings; the menisci and ACL appear normal.
As seen in this case, injuries to the MCL may also result from a pivot-shift type injury, which commonly occur while skiing. Most isolated injuries to the MCL, even frank tears, are typically treated conservatively.
