The MCL has both superficial and deep components. The deep components
anchor the body of the medial meniscus to the juxtaarticular tibia and femur; these fibers are also termed the
meniscofemoral and
meniscotibial ligaments. The longer superficial component extends from the posterior aspect of the
medial femoral condyle approximately 4-5cm above the joint line and inserts distally on the
medial tibial shaft approximately 6-7 cm below the joint line. Note the most inferior extent of the MCL is not visualized on this study.
