Case 18 - 28 weeks pregnant female with hip pain
Case 18: Young woman 28 weeks pregnant with left greater than right hip pain.
- Note the fairly symmetric bone marrow edema of the proximal femora extending from the epiphyses through the femoral necks, as evidenced by loss of T1 signal and corresponding hyperintense T2 signal. A gravid uterus is noted. These findings are compatible with transient regional osteoporosis (TRO).
- Transient regional osteoporosis is likely a subset of transient bone marrow edema syndrome. It often affects pregnant women and is usually a self-limited process. It may be complicated by insufficiency fracture and should be differentiated from avascular necrosis, neither of which are apparent in this case.
